Braintree

The Braintree payment gateway integration connects UltraCart checkout directly to PayPal Braintree, letting merchants accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, PayPal Pay Later, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and ACH Direct Debit from a single configuration. Authorizations, captures, refunds, voids, and vaulted rebills all flow through Braintree's API automatically, with no payment plugin or external connector in between.

Braintree is the enterprise payments arm of PayPal and processes more than $1.53 trillion in payment volume and 25 billion transactions every year. The gateway operates in over 200 markets, settles in 130+ presentment currencies, and holds Level 1 PCI DSS validation, making it one of the most globally capable payment options available to ecommerce merchants.

Most platforms reach Braintree through a third-party payment app that adds a monthly fee, a separate vendor relationship, and another layer of failure between the buyer and the bank. UltraCart's Braintree integration is built directly into checkout: merchants paste a Merchant ID, Public Key, and Private Key from the Braintree Control Panel into the gateway settings and the connection is live. Card vaulting, recurring billing, multi-currency processing, duplicate transaction protection, and tokenized rebills are all handled natively.

For subscription and auto-order merchants, the integration unlocks Braintree's full dual-vaulting feature set. Cards are stored in both UltraCart's vault and Braintree's vault, which lets renewals run against a persistent Braintree payment method token. That token is the entry point for Network Tokens (card-network-issued credentials that PayPal cites as lifting authorization rates by roughly 4.6%), Account Updater (silent refresh of reissued or expired cards without changing the token), and Smart Retries (real-time re-attempt of declined transactions through alternate routing). All three layer on top of the same integration and require no extra UltraCart configuration.
